Custom Lanterns for Prairie Style Architecture
The owners of this handsome brick two-story Prairie Style house approached Brass Light Gallery for custom-designed outdoor lighting to complement the style and scale of their c. 1910 home. Located in a historic district of Milwaukee known for larger-scale homes with commanding architectural style, the Prairie Style home required porch lighting at the front entrance and outdoor wall sconces for the impressive backyard privacy fence arbor. Using elements from the home as inspiration, we started with lines from the hipped roof as a guide for the shape of the lantern. Cream bricks with chocolate brown mortar are paradigms of color for the metal finish and art glass panels. A heavy cast mounting plate with an arcing upward arm holds the pitched lantern and a sloping square finial mirrors the Prairie Style home's roofline. The substantial outdoor sconces are not overwhelmed by the massive square columns of the front porch. A smaller version of this custom Prairie Style wall lantern is used at the side entrances; the back door and grilling area; and on the handcrafted privacy fence, arbor, and trellis in the backyard.
